Message from Tin Shed Owners Marcus & Karina

Dear Friends of Tin Shed Sports,

This past May 5th, Tin Shed Sports (along with Salto Coffee) celebrated the huge milestone of serving the Nederland and surrounding communities for 12 years (see note below). Yes, it’s been 12 years since we opened the shop with a group ride ending on the patio where we hosted a small party. Many of you were there that day and are still with us today. Without the support of our local community, we would never have made it this far. So, first and foremost, Marcus and Karina and all the awesome staff who have worked at Tin Shed over the years would like to thank you for your support!

As we move into our 13th year of operation, we are excited to share that Tin Shed Sports is evolving by merging with Boulder Nordic & Cycle Sport.

Please let me provide a little background on the merger. Nathan Schultz, the CEO of Boulder Nordic & Cycle Sport, has been my close friend for over 30 years. In fact, on the second day after moving to Boulder in 1991, it was Nathan who said, “Let’s go on a small ride,” and he dragged me up Flagstaff, where we did a loop of Walker Ranch. With no food or water and coming from sea level, I tried to keep up with this new “friend” who obviously was trying to punish me (it was his “easy” day). About halfway through, I really began to hate him. But by the end of the ride, I came around full circle, and we kicked off what was to become a lifetime friendship.

It was Nathan who encouraged Karina and me to open Tin Shed Sports, and without his knowledge and experience, Tin Shed would never have survived its first year in operation.

This merger is not about us losing our identity or becoming something that we are not. It is about leveraging business opportunities that Tin Shed Sports, as a small shop, simply does not have access to. It’s also about collaborating with passionate people who share our dedication and commitment to the sports we love and the communities we serve. Joining up with BNCS allows Tin Shed to offer new products and services we could not offer before.

Karina and I remain involved with Tin Shed Sports. The shop will continue to operate under the same name, with friendly staff ready to assist you with your bike and ski service needs. To celebrate this exciting milestone and to express our gratitude for your support, we invite you to come down to the shop on June 13th and head out for a fun ride. Then we will end up back at the shop and kick things off – much like we did 12 years ago! (Click here for details).

Thanks again for being part of the Tin Shed Sports Family. We look forward to seeing you at the shop, on the trails, or on the slopes!

Marcus and Karina Luscher

note: From the Colorado Small Business website: Data shows that approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years of opening, 45% during the first five years, and 65% during the first 10 years. Only 25% of businesses make it to 15 years or more.

Join us for a party and ride June 13.

Message from Boulder Sports CEO, Nathan Schultz

I am honored and excited to work with Marcus and Karina at Tin Shed Sports. Since opening in 2012, Tin Shed has been a vital resource and welcome gathering spot for the community. I look forward to re-engaging with my Ned roots and working to elevate Tin Shed’s offerings while keeping the local feel that we all love.

I’ve spent the majority of my life playing in the Indian Peaks. My family moved to Boulder in 1979, when I was 8, and shortly after, we moved to Nederland, where I spent my later elementary and middle school years. I joined the LERT cross-country ski team at Eldora at 15 and went on to ski at CU, where I was a two-time NCAA All-American and 1994 Scholar Athlete of the Year. After college, I continued skiing professionally and took up mountain bike racing as well, racing as a pro from 1996 to 2000. I retired from professional racing in 2006 and started Boulder Nordic Sport that Fall. My motivation for launching BNS was to bring my experience in skiing to help everyone enjoy the sport more.

Like many of you, I never want to learn how many times I’ve driven up and down Boulder Canyon. This amazing area has been home to countless adventures over the course of my lifetime, and it is hard to imagine a week not making that trip. From ice sailing on Mud Lake when I was 10 to thousands of laps around Eldora trails, 4-hour runs in the Indian Peaks, camping trips, backcountry skiing, Riding, Building Trails, and feeding a really hard bonk at Salto. I know how special this place is, and I look forward to keeping it that way while helping you in all the ways you enjoy it.

Everyone at Boulder Nordic & Cycle Sport is excited to be part of Tin Shed Sports. We look forward to seeing you at the shop and out there doing all the things.

-Nathan
